CASE COMPETITION RULES

2008 Midwest Decision Sciences Institute Student Case Competition

General Rules

 Please read all rules carefully:

  1. Each campus of any college/university is eligible to select a team of 3-5 members to determine the best solution for the case. Team members may not be doctoral students.
  1.  Although faculty members are encouraged to promote this competition on their campus, no faculty or other professional assistance is allowed in solving or presenting the case.
  1. Each team will have an advisor who will be the key point of contact between MWDSI and the team prior to competition.
  1. All submissions will go through a preliminary evaluation. In the preliminary evaluation the judges will not know the names of the team members or their institution. The teams corresponding to the submission that receive the highest ratings will be selected to compete at the 2008 Midwest Decision Sciences Institute Conference in Erie, Pa on April 17-19, 2008.
  1. Judges for the preliminary evaluation will be selected from academia. Judges for the final competition will be selected from the business community. The owner of the case company will be in attendance at the conference.
  1. For the final competition, each of the finalist teams will present their solution and will be required to respond to additional questions on which they will be judged. Judging will take place on the morning of April 18, 2008.  The finalist teams will be notified of the exact time and location for the contest judging.
  1. The winner and the other finalist teams will receive recognition at the awards luncheon to be held on Friday April 18, 2008.
  1. Each team is responsible for their own travel and lodging arrangements.  The faculty advisor need not attend. Upon acceptance of the case analysis, all student team members are expected to follow the normal process to register for the MDSI conference. A fully paid student registration of $30 is required for each team member.

Rules for submission of case analysis

  1. The submission must be in Microsoft Word format (.doc file extension). The case must be typed using Times New Roman font size 12, double spaced with 1 inch margins all around and must be 10 pages or less in length (not including the cover sheet).
  1. The cover sheet must include the name of the institution that the team members attend. Names and email addresses of all team members should be listed on the cover sheet. Identifying information can only be on the cover sheet. This sheet will be separated prior to the preliminary evaluation.
  1. Only publicly available information can be used in the preparation of this case.
  1. To submit an entry to the Case Competition, the Case Analysis must be uploaded to the conference website

       5. The  Ethics Statement of Compliance must be completed and mailed, emailed or faxed to:

Rules for presentation of case analysis

  1. Each team will be allocated 20 minutes with 15 minutes for the presentation and 5 minutes for a question and answer period with the judges.
  1. Team members will make their presentations using Powerpoint.
  1. Each team member is required to have an equal part in the presentation.
  1. Each team is responsible for their own materials.
  1. Visual aids will be judged on their contribution to the presentation. No handouts/written materials will be sent to the judges as part of the evaluation process.
  1. Judges will use multiple criteria in evaluating the presentations, including the technical content, presentation skills, case analysis style, presentation organization and strength of recommendations and conclusions based on case requirements.
  1. Students will be expected to work independently during the competition. Teams will not attend other team’s presentations.
  1. No audio will be allowed in the Powerpoint presentations.
  1. Presentations must be loaded on a USB flash drive to minimize setup time.
  1. Judges will not be told and should not receive any indication from the team (verbally or through colors or graphics) which school the team represents. Teams will present using a team name such as “ABC Consulting”. Individuals are free to use their real personal names in the presentation.
  1. The decision of the judges is final and is not subject to review.
  1.  Formal business attire will be appropriate for the presentation.
  1. A computer with Microsoft Office 2007 installed and projection equipment will be available.
